چکیده

The distinction between proper and improper mixtures is a staple of the discussion of foundational questions in quantum mechanics. Here we note an analogous distinction in the context of the theory of entanglement. The terminology of ‘proper’ versus ‘improper’ separability is proposed to mark the distinction. 1 Proper and Improper mixtures In many discussions of the measurement problem in quantum mechanics, it has proved essential to distinguish between density operators which can be given an ‘ignorance’ interpretation; and those which cannot. In the former case, the system whose state the density operator represents is in some definite quantum state from a specified set — say a pure state |ψi〉 — but we don’t know which. Our ignorance of the actual state can be represented by a probability distribution {pj} over the different (not necessarily orthogonal) possibilities {|ψj〉}, and the density operator may be written as

Multiplication Distributivity of Proper and Improper Intervals

The arithmetic on an extended set of proper and improper intervals presents algebraic completion of the conventional interval arithmetic allowing thus efficient solution of some interval algebraic problems. In this paper we summarize and present all distributive relations, known by now, on multiplication and addition of generalized (proper and improper) intervals.

Evaluation of Tests for Separability and Symmetry of Spatio-temporal Covariance Function

In recent years, some investigations have been carried out to examine the assumptions like stationarity, symmetry and separability of spatio-temporal covariance function which would considerably simplify fitting a valid covariance model to the data by parametric and nonparametric methods. In this article, assuming a Gaussian random field, we consider the likelihood ratio separability test, a va...

An Alternative Definition for Improper Integral with Finite Limits

There are two basic types of improper integrals. Integrals with an infinite limit are defined as the limit of a series of proper integrals as one of the limits approaches infinity. Improper integrals with finite limits are needed when the integrand does not have a finite limiting value as the variable of integration approaches a particular “critical” value. In this case, the improper integral i...

Three-Dimensional Proper and Improper Rotation Matrices

A real orthogonal matrix R is a matrix whose elements are real numbers and satisfies R−1 = R (or equivalently, RR = I, where I is the 3 × 3 identity matrix). Taking the determinant of the equation RR = I and using the fact that det(R) = det R, it follows that (det R) = 1, which implies that either detR = 1 or detR = −1. A real orthogonal matrix with detR = 1 provides a matrix representation of ...

Improper Signaling on the Two-user SISO Interference Channel

On a single-input-single-out (SISO) interference channel (IC), conventional non-cooperative strategies encourage players selfishly maximizing their transmit data rates, neglecting the deficit of performance caused by and to other players. In the case of proper complex Gaussian noise, the maximum entropy theorem shows that the best-response strategy is to transmit with proper signals (symmetric ...
